Erythema nodosum

The nodules are red or dusky purple in colour, and are painful and tender to touch. Diagnosis is not difficult. Investigation of the cause is paramount, which in this 13 year old was a Streptococcus.
The common causes of these tender red nodules are sarcoidosis, drugs and streptococci. Tuberculosis and leprosy are common worldwide and rarely the condition occurs with lymphoma and inflammatory bowel disease.
