Tinea corporis

The occlusive conditions of slight moisture and warmth provided by a watch and its strap favour the growth of tinea, particularly Trichophyton rubrum spreading from the feet. The diagnosis of eczema is usually made and the patient is prescribed topical steroids which permit the fungus to flourish even more. Note the scaling at the margin.
It is not difficult to see why this should have been diagnosed as eczema or psoriasis. They are epidermal disorders giving rise to redness and scaling. However this lesion would have been solitary (other than involvement of the feet) and unilateral. Eczema and psoriasis tend to be symmetrical and the activity at the proximal part of this annular lesion should give the clue to the correct diagnosis.
